This is the leg where the public timetable stops being an inconvenience and starts costing you the flight. On a Sunday or a public holiday the first bus out of Söll leaves at 08:20, and the journey lands at Munich Airport at 11:15. There is nothing earlier. On a Saturday the first departure is 06:50 and it gets you there at 09:37. Those are the summer-timetable figures, and they are the whole reason a departure from Söll is a different problem from an arrival into it.
A car leaves when your flight requires, not when the timetable allows. Give your carrier the flight number and let them set the pickup.
About This Transfer
The car comes to your door in Söll, takes the bags while you are still finding a passport, and is on the B 178 inside a minute. Söll to Munich Airport is about 146 km and 1h 35min in free-flow: the B 178 and B 173 down through Schwoich to the Kufstein Süd junction, 5.8 km of Austrian motorway to the border at Kiefersfelden, then the A 93 up the Inn valley, the A 8 past the Chiemsee, the A 99 around the east of Munich and the A 92 to the terminal kerb. One vehicle, one loading, and the ski bags go in the back rather than up four sets of station steps.
That 1h 35min is a routed free-flow figure and it is worth saying plainly what it is not. It is not a Saturday in February, when every chalet in the Wilder Kaiser changes over at once and the northbound funnel through Kufstein and Kiefersfelden fills with the same cars that came south a week earlier. Figures that circulate widely put this drive at 1h 09min to 1h 26min, several of them off a 135 km road shortcut that the actual route does not take. On the way in, twenty optimistic minutes cost you nothing. On the way out they are the entire margin.
The public alternative works on a weekday and fails on a Sunday. Söll has no railway station, so the sequence is a bus to Kufstein, a train to Munich, and the S-Bahn out to the airport: about 2h 25min at best, with two changes, and about 2h 52min on the first bus of the morning. Do it on a Sunday and the first bus is 08:20, which puts you at the terminal at 11:15 with an afternoon flight or nothing. Route it via Wörgl instead and it is worse, because on a Sunday line 865 does not reach Wörgl at all.

The Hohe Salve, on the morning you leave
Söll's own summit and the last thing worth doing before an afternoon flight. The summit gondola runs in summer from early July to 01.11.2026, 09:00 to 17:00, and on a clear morning the rotating terrace shows more than 70 three-thousand-metre peaks. Come down by noon, be picked up at the hotel at one, and you are at the terminal before three. Ask your carrier to build the pickup around it rather than guessing.

The barefoot and water world above the village, open daily 09.05.2026 to 01.11.2026, 08:45 to 17:30, at €37.50 adult and €19.00 child. It is the one attraction that makes a late-afternoon departure worth choosing over a morning one, because a family gets a full last day out of it and still makes an evening flight. The valley station is Stampfanger 21, 973 m from the village centre.
Hexenwasser →Kufstein Fortress
The first landmark on the way out, standing over the Inn on its own rock and visible from the motorway before the border. Open daily 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00. It is the honest answer to a late flight and a checked-out hotel room: a fortress with a hologram, a talking painting and a 270 degree projection, twenty minutes from Söll and directly on the route, rather than four hours in a departure lounge.
Festung Kufstein →Chiemsee and Herrenchiemsee
The A 8 runs along the north shore of the Chiemsee at roughly the midpoint, and Ludwig II's palace sits on Herreninsel, reached by boat from Prien am Chiemsee a few kilometres off the motorway. On a departure with a genuinely late flight it is the one stop on this corridor that justifies leaving early. Agree it with your carrier before you book: waiting time is priced, not assumed.

Söll has no car-free zone and no access restriction, so the car reaches the hotel door, the apartment and the gondola valley station alike. Give the carrier the street address rather than the resort name: SkiWelt is nine valley stations across two motorway exits, and a driver sent to Westendorf is 14.7 km and a different junction away from one sent to Söll. On a departure the pickup point matters less than the pickup time, and both belong in the booking.

Two terminals with the Munich Airport Center concourse between them, and they are a long walk apart, so the carrier needs the terminal as well as the flight number. Terminal 2 departures are on Level 04. The airport allows a curbside stop of 0 to 10 minutes free, twice per calendar day, which is enough for a drop-off with the bags handed out at the kerb, and charges from €3.00 beyond it. The pressure on this corridor is Saturday inside the SkiWelt high season, 19.12.2026 to 12.03.2027, and northbound it lands in the morning: the changeover traffic that fills the German motorways is heading the same way you are. A weekday departure runs close to the free-flow 1h 35min. Nobody publishes a Saturday drive time for this corridor, so any figure you are quoted for one is your carrier's own estimate rather than a timetable, and the sensible response is to leave earlier rather than to argue with it. The same applies to a first-flight-of-the-day departure: the road is empty at 05:00, and that is the one morning in the week when the drive is genuinely faster than the routed figure.
Traffic Patterns
Going out, the bottleneck is the far end of the drive rather than the near end. The Austrian section is 5.8 km and the B roads from Söll carry local traffic, so the first twenty minutes are reliable. It is the border at Kiefersfelden and then the German A 93 and A 8 up to the A 99 that funnel every car returning from Tyrol, and on a changeover Saturday that funnel is the whole reason people miss flights on this route. Flying from Innsbruck avoids the crossing altogether, which is a real argument and is covered in the FAQs below rather than pretended away.
Road & Border Notes
One border, taken on the motorway between the A 12 and the A 93, with no scheduled stop. No Austrian vignette is needed on the Kufstein Süd routing and there is no Streckenmaut anywhere on this corridor: ASFINAG lists the A 12 between the Kufstein Süd junction and the national border as toll-free, and Söll sits inside it. Two limits. The exemption does not cover vehicles over 3.5 t, which are tolled under the Austrian lorry system, and it is lost if the car joins the motorway at Wörgl Ost instead. Austrian winter tyre law runs 1 November to 15 April: a car up to 3.5 t needs winter tyres in wintry conditions with 4 mm of tread, a minibus over 3.5 t needs them for the whole period whatever the weather and must carry chains for two drive wheels. Penalties start at €35 and reach €5,000 where other road users are put at risk.

Give the carrier the flight number, the terminal and the check-in you have been told to make, and let them set the pickup time rather than naming one yourself. That is the single decision this leg turns on, and a driver who works the corridor prices the Saturday differently from the Tuesday because they have sat in both. Two smaller things. Between 1 May 2026 and 1 November 2026, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays plus 29 May and 2 October, Tyrol bans through traffic from the smaller roads in the Kufstein district between 07:00 and 19:00 to stop cars dodging motorway queues, and origin traffic is exempt, so a transfer genuinely starting in Söll is fine. And if you are leaving before the hotel breakfast, say so when you book: the pickup and the checkout are two different conversations and only one of them is with your carrier.
