The first bus out of Ellmau on a Sunday or public holiday leaves at 07:55, and the fastest journey from it puts you at Munich Airport at 11:15, three hours and twenty minutes later with three changes. There is nothing earlier by any public route. On a Saturday the first is the 06:25, arriving 09:37. Those are the summer-timetable figures, and they are the reason a departure from Ellmau is a different problem from an arrival into it: on the way in a late connection costs you an evening, and on the way out it costs you the flight.

The car comes to your door in Ellmau, takes the ski bags while somebody is still hunting for a boarding pass, and is on the B 178 within a minute of the village. Ellmau to Munich Airport is about 150 km and 1h 40min in free flow: the B 178 and B 173 down through Söll and Schwoich to the Kufstein Süd junction, 5.4 km of Austrian motorway to the border at Kiefersfelden, then the A 93 down the Inn valley, the A 8 past the Chiemsee, the A 99 around the east side of Munich and the A 92 to the terminal kerb. One vehicle, one loading, and no part of the journey where a bag has to be carried up a flight of station steps.
That 1h 40min is a routed free-flow figure and it is worth being precise about what it is not. It is not a Saturday in February, when every chalet between Going and Söll changes over at once and the northbound funnel through Kufstein and Kiefersfelden fills with the cars that came south a week earlier. Figures that circulate widely for this drive run from 1h 13min to 2h 45min and from 118 km to 201 km, several of them describing a different Ellmau altogether. On the way in, twenty optimistic minutes cost you nothing. On the way out they are the whole margin.
The public alternative is real on a weekday and thin at the ends of it. Ellmau has no railway station, so the sequence is line 866 to a railhead, a train down the Munich to Innsbruck main line, and the S-Bahn out to the airport: 2h 50min at best with two changes, against a drive of 1h 40min. The first weekday bus toward Kufstein is the 06:25 and the journey from it reaches the terminal at 09:15. On a Sunday the first bus is 07:55 and the first arrival is 11:15, so a Sunday flight leaving Munich before about 13:30 is not reachable from Ellmau by timetable at all.

The Hartkaiserbahn, on the morning you leave
Ellmau's own cable car, nine minutes and ten seats a cabin from the valley station at 820 m to 1,550 m, running daily 09:00 to 17:00 from 09.05.2026 to 08.11.2026. It is the one thing worth doing on a departure day with an afternoon flight: up at nine, down by noon, picked up at the hotel at one. The valley station is Weißachgraben 5 and its car park is open around the clock, so it also works as the pickup point itself if the last morning is spent up the mountain rather than in the room.

The practice is the Hinterschnabel farm at Faistenbichl 15, and the tourist board is explicit that there are no parking spaces at it and that it is reachable on foot only. The place a vehicle can legitimately wait is the Kirchbichllift and Bergdoktor-Praxis car park on Austrasse, open 24 hours, about ten minutes and 700 m below it with 50 m of ascent between the two. From the village centre the walk is roughly twenty minutes, which is the number most often quoted for the car park by mistake. Give your carrier the car park, not the practice.

The trailhead for the Ellmauer Tor, at 1,085 m, inside a nature reserve that covers 2,262 hectares, 16.8 percent of the whole tourism association's area. It is the reason the summer season here is the bigger one: the Wilder Kaiser recorded 1,097,976 summer overnight stays in 2025 against 878,054 in winter. On a departure day it is an early start rather than a late one, so agree the pickup time before you set off up the hill rather than after.

The first landmark on the way out, standing over the Inn on its own rock and visible from the motorway before the border. Open daily 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, and directly on the route rather than a detour from it. It is the honest answer to a late flight and a hotel room already handed back: twenty-odd minutes from Ellmau, and a better place to spend two hours than a departure gate. Agree the stop with your carrier when you book, because waiting time is priced rather than assumed.

Ellmau has no car-free zone, so the vehicle reaches the hotel door, the apartment and the cable car valley station alike. Give the carrier the street address rather than the resort name: the SkiWelt is nine valley stations spread across the Brixental and the Wilder Kaiser, and a driver sent to the wrong one is a different village and a different motorway exit away. The single exception is the Bergdoktor practice, which no car can reach; the Kirchbichllift car park on Austrasse is the collection point for it.

Two terminals with the Munich Airport Center concourse between them, and they are a long walk apart, so the carrier needs the terminal as well as the flight number. Terminal 2 departures are on Level 04. The pressure on this corridor is Saturday inside the SkiWelt high season, 19.12.2026 to 12.03.2027, and northbound it lands in the morning: the changeover traffic filling the German motorways is going the same way you are. A weekday departure runs close to the routed 1h 40min. Nobody publishes a Saturday or Sunday drive time for this corridor, so any figure you are quoted for one is your carrier's estimate rather than a timetable, and the sensible response is to leave earlier rather than to argue with it. The first flight of the day is the exception that works in your favour: at 05:00 the road is empty and the drive is genuinely quicker than the routed figure, which is also the departure no bus can serve.
Traffic Patterns
Going out, the bottleneck is the far end rather than the near end. The Austrian section is 5.4 km of motorway and the B roads out of Ellmau carry local traffic, so the first half hour is reliable. It is the border at Kiefersfelden and then the German A 93 and A 8 up to the A 99 that funnel every car leaving Tyrol. The mechanism most likely to turn 1h 40min into three hours is the Tyrolean lorry metering on the A 12, which admits a maximum of 250 trucks an hour near the Kufstein-Nord exit and produces a queue the ADAC says often extends back onto the A 8. It is a lorry measure, but the queue is on the road you are using. Flying from Innsbruck or Salzburg avoids the crossing entirely, which is a real argument and is answered in the FAQs rather than pretended away.
Road & Border Notes
One border, taken on the motorway between the A 12 and the A 93, with no scheduled stop. No Austrian vignette is needed on this routing and there is no Streckenmaut anywhere on the corridor: ASFINAG lists the A 12 between the national border and the Kufstein Süd junction as toll-free, and Ellmau joins the motorway at exactly that junction. The Wilder Kaiser tourist board puts it as "completely toll-free" and the SkiWelt lift company states it in capitals. One limit worth knowing: the exemption does not cover vehicles over 3.5 t, which are tolled under the Austrian lorry system instead. Austrian winter tyre law runs 1 November to 15 April, and it binds a commercial vehicle harder than a private one: a car up to 3.5 t needs winter tyres in wintry conditions with 4 mm of tread, while a vehicle over 3.5 t needs them for the whole period whatever the weather and must carry chains for at least two drive wheels. Penalties start at €35 and reach €5,000 where other road users are endangered.
Carrier Tip

That is the single decision this leg turns on, and a driver who works the corridor prices a Saturday differently from a Tuesday because they have sat in both. Three smaller things. If the last morning includes the Bergdoktor practice, the collection point is the Kirchbichllift car park and not the practice itself, which no vehicle can reach. Between 1 May 2026 and 1 November 2026, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays plus 29 May and 2 October, Tyrol closes the smaller roads in the Kufstein district to through traffic from 07:00 to 19:00 to stop cars dodging motorway queues; origin traffic is exempt, so a transfer genuinely starting in Ellmau is unaffected. And if the pickup is before the hotel breakfast, settle that with the hotel separately: your carrier can be outside at 04:30, but only the hotel can open the door.
