Ellmau has three drop-off points, and one of them no car reaches
Give your carrier the street address, not the village name. The Hartkaiserbahn valley station is Weißachgraben 5 and its car park is open around the clock. The Bergdoktor practice at Faistenbichl 15 is marked by the tourist board as reachable on foot only, with no parking at the set at all: the car park that serves it is the Kirchbichllift one on Austrasse, about ten minutes and 700 m below it, or roughly twenty minutes on foot from the village centre. And the hotels are a third set of addresses again, spread along the valley between the two.
Since 2017 the B 178 has passed under the village in an underpass rather than through it, so a driver following signs for St. Johann can miss Ellmau entirely.
About This Transfer
You get into the car in the arrivals hall at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 and you are on the A 92 within minutes, pointed south. Munich Airport to Ellmau is about 151 km and 1h 40min in free-flow, and almost all of it is motorway: the A 99 around the east of Munich, the A 8 past the Chiemsee, the A 93 down the Inn valley, the border at Kiefersfelden, then 5.8 km of Austrian motorway before the car leaves it again at Kufstein Süd. After that it is 9 km of B 173 and 5.4 km of the B 178 Loferer Straße through Söll and Scheffau, and the driver stops at your door rather than at a station in the valley.
One routing detail is worth knowing before you compare offers: this drive needs no Austrian vignette. ASFINAG lists the A 12 between the national border and the Kufstein Süd junction as toll-free, the Wilder Kaiser tourist board says the same, and Ellmau is reached by leaving the motorway at exactly that exit. That only holds on this routing. Stay on the A 12 to Wörgl Ost, the exit for the far side of the SkiWelt, and the vignette is required from the border onward.
Ellmau has no railway station, and the public route is genuinely better than most people are told. It is a train to Kufstein, then VVT bus 866, which is one direct bus of 48 to 53 minutes calling at four stops inside the village. Two adults with soft bags on a weekday afternoon will be fine on it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Where it stops working is a Sunday evening, when the last 866 out of Kufstein Bahnhof leaves at 18:05, and any arrival at all with children, hard ski cases and four separate boardings between the baggage belt and the hotel.
A private car makes that one boarding, and it is the only way to reach the Kirchbichllift car park or the Hartkaiserbahn directly. Chiemsee and Herrenchiemsee
The A 8 runs along the north shore of the Chiemsee at roughly the midpoint of the drive, and Ludwig II's palace sits on the island of Herreninsel, reached by boat from Prien am Chiemsee a few kilometres off the motorway. On a summer transfer with time in hand it is the one stop on this corridor worth breaking the journey for. Ask your carrier before you book: waiting time is priced, not assumed.
Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung →Kufstein Fortress
The last thing you pass before the car leaves the motorway, standing over the Inn on its own rock and visible from the road. Open daily 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, it carries the Heldenorgel in its Bürgerturm and a 270 degree projection inside, which makes it the wet-weather half day for a family already staying in the Wilder Kaiser rather than only a landmark you point at from the back seat.
Festung Kufstein →The Bergdoktor practice at Faistenbichl
The Hinterschnabel farm, first recorded in the village history around 1694, is the practice in the ZDF series and it is open to visitors in summer on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 09:30 to 12:00, at €4.00 for an individual guest and free for children up to six. It closes for the whole winter and it closes on filming days. There is no parking at the set: the tourist board points visitors at the Kirchbichllift car park on Austrasse, about ten minutes and 700 m below it, or the KaiserJet bus to the Ellmau Bergdoktorpraxis stop.

Ellmau's own lift, from the valley station at Weißachgraben 5 at 820 m to 1,550 m in nine minutes, in ten-seat cabins, with the car park at the bottom open 24 hours. It runs daily 09.05.2026 to 08.11.2026 from 09:00 to 17:00, which is the frame around Ellmau's summer: the top station is where the family walking and the mountain restaurants start, and it is what makes a June or September transfer here worth booking rather than a ski-season one only.

The trailhead for the classic ascent into the Wilder Kaiser, reached by the free line 40 hiking bus from the Ellmau Dorf/Bauhof stop every day in summer. The range above it is a designated nature reserve of 2,262 ha, a sixth of the whole Wilder Kaiser area, which is why the walking here reads differently from a ski resort's summer programme. Going village square, 3.1 km east, is the series' Gasthof exterior and is closed to buses, with parking at the fire station a ten-minute walk away.

Pickup: Munich Airport (MUC)
Two terminals with the Munich Airport Center concourse between them, and they are a long walk apart, so your carrier needs the terminal as well as the flight number. Terminal 2 arrivals are on Level 03, departures on Level 04. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your own terminal with a name board; the MAC concourse is the usual fallback because it serves both. The airport gives the curbside lanes 0 to 10 minutes free, twice per calendar day, and from the third entry in a day there is no free period at all, which is why a carrier meeting a delayed flight uses P20 or P26 for Terminal 2, or P1, P2, P3 and P7 for Terminal 1.

Ellmau has no car-free zone and no access restriction, so the car reaches the village, the lift and the hotels. It does not reach the Bergdoktor practice, which the tourist board marks as walk-only with no parking at the set. The B 178 has run under the village in an underpass since 2017 rather than through it, so the Ellmau exit is taken deliberately and a driver on autopilot for St. Johann goes past. Give the carrier the hotel address rather than the resort name and the drop lands where you sleep.

Best Travel Times
Two seasons load this corridor and they are not the one you would guess. Winter peaks on Saturdays through the SkiWelt season, 05.12.2026 to 29.03.2027, when every chalet in the Wilder Kaiser changes over at once. But summer is the bigger season here in absolute terms: the Wilder Kaiser recorded 1,097,976 overnight stays in summer 2025 against 878,054 in winter, with bed occupancy of 43.5 percent against 36.1 percent. A weekday landing in either season runs close to the free-flow 1h 40min. Nobody publishes a Saturday drive time for this corridor, so treat any Saturday figure you are quoted as your carrier's own estimate and not a timetable.
Traffic Patterns
The bottleneck is not in Austria and it is not the ski traffic. Tyrol meters lorries permanently on the A 12 near the Kufstein-Nord exit at a maximum of 250 an hour, and when the cap is reached the stopped lorries leave one lane for everything else and the queue, in ADAC's words, often extends back to the A 8. That is the mechanism that turns a 1h 40min transfer into three hours, and it sits on the exact stretch every Ellmau transfer uses. The metering days change through the year, so a carrier who works this corridor checks on the morning of the run rather than assuming. South of Kufstein Süd the road carries local rather than transit traffic, so the delay, when there is one, happens in the first hour and not the last twenty minutes.
Road & Border Notes
One border, taken on the motorway between the A 93 and the A 12, with no scheduled stop. No Austrian vignette is needed on the Kufstein Süd routing and there is no Streckenmaut anywhere on this corridor, which is unusual in the Alps. Two limits on that: the exemption does not cover vehicles over 3.5 t, which are tolled under the Austrian lorry system instead, and it disappears if the driver stays on the A 12 to Wörgl Ost. Austrian winter tyre law runs 1 November to 15 April. A car up to 3.5 t needs winter tyres in wintry conditions, marked M+S, M.S., M&S, MS or M/S, with 4 mm of tread; a minibus over 3.5 t needs them for the whole period whatever the weather and must carry chains for two drive wheels it may never fit. Penalties start at €35 and reach €5,000 where other road users are put at risk.
Carrier Tip
Name the address, then name which of Ellmau's three drop-off points it is. The village centre, the Hartkaiserbahn at Weißachgraben 5 and the Kirchbichllift car park on Austrasse are all legitimate stops and they are not near each other on foot in ski boots or with a small child. Since 2017 the B 178 passes under the village rather than through it, and the related Scheffau junction was rebuilt grade-separated between 2021 and 2024, so any route knowledge older than that is wrong on both. One more, for the summer: between 1 May 2026 and 1 November 2026, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays plus 29 May and 2 October, Tyrol bans through traffic from the smaller roads in the Kufstein district from 07:00 to 19:00 to stop cars dodging motorway queues. Destination traffic is exempt, so a transfer that is genuinely going to Ellmau is fine, which is another reason the address matters.

The pressure inside the season is Saturday, when the whole Wilder Kaiser changes over at once and the German motorways carry northern Europe south through the same funnel the lorry metering sits on. Book the transfer when the flight is booked, not when the ski pass is. One thing closes for the whole winter: the Bergdoktor practice, which is a summer visit only.

Low DemandEllmau gets a week the rest of the SkiWelt does not: the area closes on 29 March 2027 and Ellmau runs on to 4 April 2027, so a late-Easter booking that fails everywhere else in the Wilder Kaiser still works here. Then the valley goes quiet until the lifts turn again for the summer, which in 2026 meant the Hartkaiserbahn from 09.05.2026 and the Astbergbahn in neighbouring Going from 04.06.2026. The 2027 summer dates are not published yet, so check them before you book a May arrival. This is the cheapest and emptiest month to be driven here, if that is what you want.

Then everything stops until 5 December.
