Serfaus is car-free in winter, and the Landeck Tunnel is shut until early December
From 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 Serfaus is closed to motor traffic under a district ordinance (VBl. LA Nr. 7/2024). A chauffeured hire vehicle of any size, which is what a booked transfer usually is, may drive in only on the shortest route and only with the Gemeinde Serfaus permit card on the vehicle. A licensed taxi carrying arriving guests is exempt without one. Fiss and Ladis publish no equivalent ban.
The Landeck Tunnel, on the last stretch before the plateau, is closed day and night from 06:00 on 12 October 2026 and is planned to reopen at 06:00 on 7 December 2026. Until then a diversion through Zams and Landeck adds 5 to 6 km and roughly 10 minutes.
About This Transfer
You get into the car at Munich Airport and ride about 108 km of German motorway round the west of the city and down the A95 towards the Alps. The motorway ends before Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and from there the drive is main road: through Garmisch, over the border to Ehrwald, across the Fernpass at 1,210 m and down to Imst. A short run on the A12 and through the Landeck Tunnel brings you to the B180, and at Ried im Oberinntal the L19 climbs to the plateau. Munich Airport to Serfaus is about 230 km and 3h 05min in free flow.
The pass is the part to plan around. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, about 135 km in, is only about the halfway point in time, because the last 95 km are two-lane pass and valley road, not motorway. That road is busy as well: Land Tirol counts up to 30,000 vehicles on the Fernpass on its busiest days. When it is jammed or shut, a carrier can go round through Kufstein and Innsbruck on motorway instead, just under 300 km and about 3h 25min, about 20 minutes more.
Innsbruck is the nearest airport, about 89 km and 1h 10min from Serfaus, and Munich is about two hours further. The case for Munich is the flight. It handled 43.4 million passengers in 2025, while Innsbruck is slot-coordinated on winter Saturdays and Sundays, which limits how many flights it can add on a ski weekend.
Three villages share the plateau and one road: Ladis first, then Fiss, then Serfaus, which bans traffic in winter. If you have not booked the flight yet, our guide to choosing between Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck weighs the flights against the drive, and the ski transfers guide covers what skis and group size do to the vehicle. Every other run from the terminal is on the Munich Airport transfers page.
- ✓ A95 towards Garmisch, the Fernpass, then the A12 near Imst and the L19 up to the plateau
- ✓ About 3h 05min to Serfaus
- ✓ Door drop in Fiss or Ladis; Serfaus by arrangement
Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
Tiroler Zugspitzbahn
From Obermoos above Ehrwald, about 3 km up a side road from the B187, the cable car climbs to the Zugspitze, 2,962 m and Germany's highest peak, in ten minutes. In winter 2026/27 it runs on 4 to 6 December and 11 to 13 December 2026, then daily from 18 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, from 08:40 to 16:40. It is a stop for a departure day with a late flight, not for an arrival.
Tiroler Zugspitzbahn →Pontlatz Bridge and the bronze eagle
Where the B180 meets the Inn below Fließ, the Pontlatz bridge was fought over twice, in 1703 and in 1809, by Tyrolean riflemen against Bavarian and French troops. The bronze eagle on the bank went up in 1904. You pass it a few minutes before the turn for the plateau.
Kaunertal →The Serfaus underground
The village railway under Serfaus has floated on a cushion of air since 1985. It costs nothing, moves up to 3,000 people an hour to the cable car valley station, and in winter 2026/27 it operates from 07:45 to 18:45 between 4 December 2026 and 4 April 2027. With it, a week in Serfaus needs no car at all.

Pickup: Munich Airport (MUC)
Carriers usually meet you in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board, and yours confirms the meeting point before the day. The kerb in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 allows a stop of 10 minutes free of charge, twice per calendar day, which is not enough to meet a ski flight, so a driver who waits for you parks. For longer waits the airport points drivers to the P20 car park and the P1, P3 and P4 underground car parks. In Terminal 2 the arrival lane is on Level 03.
Popular Pickup Points:
- • Terminal 1 arrivals, meeting point confirmed by your carrier
- • Terminal 2 arrivals, arrival lane on Level 03
- • P20 and the P1, P3 and P4 car parks for a delayed flight
- • Out to the car once you have your ski bags
Drop-off: Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis, Tyrol
Ladis, at 1,189 m, is the first turn off the L19, then Fiss at 1,438 m and Serfaus at 1,429 m. In Fiss and Ladis the drop is an ordinary hotel door. Serfaus is closed to traffic in winter, so for a Serfaus address name the hotel and its street and read Driving Into Serfaus in Winter below before you book.
Popular Drop-off Points:
- • Hotels in Fiss
- • Hotels in Ladis
- • Serfaus, at the set-down point agreed in advance
- • The village and full address agreed in the offer

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Best Travel Times
The season runs from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with the tourist board's high season from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027 and again from 20 to 29 March 2027. Until 06:00 on 7 December 2026 the Landeck Tunnel is planned to stay shut, so the opening weekend arrives by the diversion. Put the child seats and the ski bags in the request, because they decide the vehicle.
Traffic Patterns
The Fernpass is the variable. Land Tirol describes the pass section as steep banks and tight bends where bad weather often brings delays and queues, and says queues on the busiest travel days will never go away entirely. No Saturday or snowfall drive time is published for this route, so treat any figure you are quoted as a carrier's estimate.
Road & Border Notes
The border is between Griesen and Ehrwald, and there are no systematic checks on entry into Austria. The Fernpass road has no toll today; Land Tirol plans a through-traffic toll once the Fernpass tunnel opens, which its timetable puts at 2030. The vignette is covered under Tolls and the Austrian Vignette below. Austrian winter tyre law runs from 1 November to 15 April: cars need winter tyres in wintry conditions. Lorries over 7.5 t are banned from the pass, which does not affect a minibus.
Carrier Tip
Give the carrier the village, the full address and the flight number, and say how many ski bags and child seats are coming. Ask which way the driver plans to go on the day: over the Fernpass in normal conditions, or round through Kufstein and Innsbruck when the pass is jammed or shut. Until 7 December 2026, ask the carrier to check the Land Tirol page for the Landeck Tunnel as well.

Price & Vehicle Options
A private transfer from Munich Airport to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis starts from around €265 one way in a saloon. The price is per vehicle, not per person. Four people in an estate at €295 is about €74 each, with the skis loaded once. Declare skis, boot bags and child seats when you book, because they decide which vehicle a carrier sends.

When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Mar)
Peak DemandThe season opens on 4 December 2026, three days before the Landeck Tunnel is planned to reopen at 06:00 on 7 December, so the opening weekend arrives by the diversion. The tourist board's high season runs from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027. What families come for is on the mountain: 214 km of slopes on 38 lifts, three children's areas with 125,000 m² between them, and two ski schools with over 700 instructors. Request the transfer as soon as the flight is booked.
- Season opens 4 December 2026
- Landeck Tunnel due to reopen 7 December 2026
- High season 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027
Spring (Mar-Apr)
High DemandSpring has an unusual shape here. Low season runs from 13 to 19 March 2027, then high season returns from 20 to 29 March, and the last week to 4 April 2027 is low season again. The Serfaus driving ban ends with the season on 4 April. Winter tyre law still applies to 15 April, and from 2027 the Landeck Tunnel closes for about a month each spring.
- High season 20 to 29 March 2027
- Season closes 4 April 2027
- Winter tyre period ends 15 April
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Medium DemandThe drive is the same road without the winter tyre question. The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn above Ehrwald runs daily from 6 May to 7 November 2027, which makes the Zugspitze a real stop on a summer transfer.
- Tiroler Zugspitzbahn daily from 6 May 2027
- No winter tyre requirement before 1 November
- Serfaus is a 20 km/h shared space all year
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Low DemandAutumn is the quiet gap. The Serfaus underground is closed from 12 October to 3 December 2026, and the Landeck Tunnel is shut day and night from 12 October to 7 December, so traffic uses the diversion through Zams and Landeck. From 1 November winter tyre law applies. From 2027 to 2030 the tunnel closes for about two months each autumn, so check the Land Tirol page before any autumn trip.
- Landeck Tunnel closed from 12 October 2026
- Winter tyre period starts 1 November
- Underground reopens 4 December 2026

Important Information
Fernpass or Inn Valley
There are two ways to drive this. Over the Fernpass it is about 230 km and 3h 05min, with about 45 km of Austrian main road between the border and Imst. Through the Inn valley, by Kufstein and Innsbruck, it is just under 300 km and about 3h 25min, on motorway nearly all the way. The Fernpass is the default; the Inn valley is the fallback when the pass is jammed or shut, and it needs a vignette for almost all of the A12. A third way through Mittenwald, Seefeld and Telfs is about 247 km and 3h 15min.
Tolls and the Austrian Vignette
The Fernpass road needs no vignette, but the fastest route does: it joins the A12 near Imst for about 16 km, including the Landeck Tunnel, and the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis tourist board states that a vignette is required through the tunnel. On the 2026 tariff, valid to 30 November 2026, a car pays €9.60 for one day or €12.80 for ten. The vignette year 2027 starts on 1 December 2026 and covers the ski season; as of October 2026 its tariff is not published. From the vignette year 2027 only the digital vignette exists. There is no section toll on this route, and no toll on the Fernpass today.
Driving Into Serfaus in Winter
Under ordinance VBl. LA Nr. 7/2024, all motor traffic is banned on Serfaus's village roads from the first Friday of the winter season to its last Sunday, which for 2026/27 is 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. A chauffeured hire vehicle of any size, the category a booked transfer usually falls in, may drive in only on the shortest route, only with a permit card from the Gemeinde Serfaus displayed on the vehicle, and may not carry people to or from the underground or cable car stations. A licensed taxi carrying arriving or departing guests is exempt without a card. Ask the carrier which applies to its vehicle, and agree the set-down point and the last stretch with your accommodation and the carrier before you travel. The tourist board lists a day car park at the entrance to the village, and the underground runs from 07:45 to 18:45, so a late arrival needs that agreement most. The village is a 20 km/h shared space all year.
The Landeck Tunnel Closures
The Landeck Tunnel, 6,949 m on the spur from the A12 to the B180, is being renovated until December 2030. In 2026 it is closed day and night from 06:00 on 12 October to 06:00 on 7 December; the tourist board words the reopening date as expected. The diversion runs on the L76 and B171 through Zams and Landeck and adds 5 to 6 km and roughly 10 minutes. From 2027 to 2030 it closes for about a month each spring and two months each autumn. Land Tirol posts day-by-day changes on its Landeck Tunnel page.
Meeting Your Driver at Munich Airport
Carriers usually meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board; confirm the meeting point and the terminal with yours. The kerb at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 allows 10 minutes free of charge twice per calendar day, so a driver who waits for a delayed flight parks. In Terminal 2 the arrival lane is on Level 03. Your carrier tracks the flight rather than the timetable.
Serfaus, Fiss or Ladis
The three villages share one ski area and are three drops on one road. Ladis, at 1,189 m, is the first and nearest, about 224 km from Munich Airport; Fiss, at 1,438 m, is about 227 km; Serfaus, at 1,429 m, is about 230 km. Serfaus to Fiss is 3.2 km and Fiss to Ladis 4.7 km. Give the carrier the village and the full address, not the ski area's name.
Skis, Snowboards and Child Seats
Declare skis, snowboards and boot bags when you book, not on the day. Pricing is per vehicle, so equipment changes which vehicle the carrier sends. A saloon does not take a family's ski bags. Carriers provide child seats on request: put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment, and confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.
Which Timetable These Figures Come From
The public transport times on this page come from the ÖBB journey planner, queried on 9 October 2026 for Saturday 5, Sunday 6 and Monday 7 December 2026, while the Landeck Tunnel is still closed and before the winter timetable change. The planner does not yet return journeys from Munich after 12 December 2026. For the bus alone it does: the last bus from Landeck-Zams to Serfaus leaves at 18:40 on 20 December 2026 and on 9, 10 and 13 January 2027 as well. Check the current timetable before you travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Munich Airport from Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and how long is the drive?
About 230 km and 3 hours 5 minutes to Serfaus in free-flow traffic, routed on OpenStreetMap data over the Fernpass. Fiss is about 227 km and Ladis about 224 km, both about 3 hours, because the turn for Ladis comes first, then Fiss, then Serfaus. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, about 135 km in, is only about the halfway point in time, because the last 95 km are pass and valley road. Allow more on a winter Saturday.
Is it faster to drive from Munich Airport to Serfaus over the Fernpass or through the Inn valley?
Over the Fernpass, when the road is clear. That way is about 230 km and 3h 05min; through the Inn valley by Kufstein and Innsbruck it is just under 300 km and about 3h 25min, about 65 km longer and about 20 minutes slower. The Fernpass is a two-lane mountain road that carries up to 30,000 vehicles on its busiest days, and Land Tirol says bad weather often brings delays and queues there. When it is jammed or shut, the motorway through the Inn valley is the fallback, and a carrier who drives the route chooses on the day.
Do I need an Austrian vignette to drive from Munich Airport to Serfaus over the Fernpass?
Yes, on the fastest route. The Fernpass road itself needs no vignette, but the last stretch does: the route joins the A12 near Imst for about 16 km, including the Landeck Tunnel. There is no toll on the Fernpass today. On a private transfer the vignette is the carrier's to hold, and most carriers fold it into the fare.
Which airport is closest to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis?
Innsbruck. It is about 89 km and 1h 10min from Serfaus by road. Memmingen is about 179 km and 2h 35min, and Munich about 230 km and 3h 05min, both over the Fernpass. Munich's case is the flight, not the distance: it handled 43.4 million passengers in 2025, while Innsbruck is slot-coordinated on winter Saturdays and Sundays. If your flight lands at Munich, a private transfer takes you from the terminal to your village in one ride.
How long does the train from Munich Airport to Serfaus take, and how many changes are there?
About five to six hours with three or four changes, on the ÖBB planner's timetable for 5 to 7 December 2026. The fastest journey takes 4 hours 56 minutes with three changes. No railway reaches the plateau: the nearest station is Landeck-Zams, about 3h 40min from the airport at best with two changes, and the bus from there to Serfaus takes 1 hour. The winter timetable after 12 December may differ. A private transfer takes about 3h 05min, with the bags loaded once.
Can I get from Munich Airport to Serfaus by train and bus if my flight lands at 17:00?
Not the same day. On the ÖBB planner's timetable for 5, 6 and 7 December 2026, the last airport departure that reaches Serfaus that day leaves at 14:44 and arrives at 19:40, because the last bus up from Landeck-Zams leaves at 18:40. The planner shows the same last bus on 20 December 2026 and in January 2027. After the 14:44, the next arrival in Serfaus is 07:10 the following morning. A private transfer leaves the airport when you have your bags and reaches the plateau the same evening; for a Serfaus address, agree the set-down point for a late arrival in advance.
Can a transfer drive me to my hotel in Serfaus in winter?
Only with a permitted vehicle. Serfaus bans motor traffic from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 under ordinance VBl. LA Nr. 7/2024. A chauffeured hire vehicle of any size, which is what a booked transfer usually is, may drive in only on the shortest route and only with the Gemeinde Serfaus permit card on the vehicle. A licensed taxi carrying arriving or departing guests is exempt without one. Ask the carrier which applies to its vehicle, and agree the set-down point with your accommodation and the carrier before you travel. Fiss and Ladis publish no equivalent ban.
Is the Landeck Tunnel closed, and does it affect the drive from Munich to Serfaus?
Yes, in autumn 2026. The Landeck Tunnel, between the A12 and the B180, is closed day and night from 06:00 on 12 October 2026 and is planned to reopen at 06:00 on 7 December 2026, with a diversion on the L76 and B171 through Zams and Landeck. From the Munich side that adds 5 to 6 km and roughly 10 minutes. The ski season opens on 4 December, so its first weekend falls inside the closure. From 2027 to 2030 the tunnel closes for about a month each spring and two months each autumn.
Is there a shuttle bus from Munich Airport to Serfaus, Fiss or Ladis?
No scheduled shared shuttle is published by the airport or the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis tourist board, and the public timetable has no through service: every journey changes at least three times, by way of the station at Landeck-Zams, about 30 km from the villages. Some operators sell shared seats, which means sharing the vehicle and its timing with other parties. A private transfer is booked per vehicle, from around €265 for a saloon, and leaves when you are ready.
How much does a transfer from Munich Airport to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis cost?
From around €265 for a saloon, €295 for an estate, €375 for a minivan and €505 for a minibus, one way. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and indicative. TransferBnB is a request-for-offers marketplace: you post the trip with your flight, passenger count, ski bags and the village, and verified carriers send offers you compare before you pay.

What our customers say
Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
Thomas B. — London, UK Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
Marta R. — Munich, Germany Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
Olivier D. — Lyon, France Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
