Austria has two towns called St. Johann, and the St. Johann tourist board and the Pongau ski area both put them about two hours from Munich. This page is St. Johann in Tirol, in the Kitzbühel district under the Wilder Kaiser, reached by the Inn valley and the Kufstein Süd exit. St. Johann im Pongau is in the Salzburg region, reached by the A 8 and the A 10 Tauern motorway: about 230 km and 2h 25min from the airport, and 85 km by road from the Tyrolean town. Check the name on your accommodation booking before you book the car.

About This Transfer
You get into the car at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 and are on the A 92 within minutes. Munich Airport to St. Johann in Tirol is about 163 km and 1h 55min in free flow. The motorway part is the A 99 round the east of Munich, the A 8 towards Rosenheim and the A 93 down the Inn valley to the border at Kiefersfelden. After only 5.8 km of the Austrian A 12 the car leaves at Kufstein Süd, takes the B 173 over the Eiberg to Söll and follows the B 178 past Scheffau, Ellmau and Going into St. Johann. The driver stops at your hotel, not at the edge of the pedestrian zone.
That exit makes this one of the vignette-free drives out of Munich. On the Austrian side, the A 12 from the border to Kufstein Süd needs no vignette, and the fastest route to St. Johann leaves it there. The St. Johann tourist board gives the same route from Germany. Staying on the motorway to Wörgl Ost and taking the B 178 round through Kirchbichl is 14 km longer, about 15 minutes slower, and does need a vignette.
St. Johann has its own express train station in the town, 1.4 km from the main square. The trains are the difficulty, not the station: on the timetable for the season's opening weekend, the fastest journey from the airport takes 2 hours 45 minutes with two changes, and a family landing in the evening is looking at the 19:44, which reaches St. Johann at 23:08. After the 21:04, which arrives at 01:08 with four changes, the next train on a Sunday night arrives at 06:08.

Kufstein Fortress
The fortress stands on its rock above the Inn in Kufstein, just before this route leaves the motorway at Kufstein Süd, so it is the one stop that costs little detour. It opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, 3 November 2026 to 20 March 2027, with last entry at 16:00, and from 09:00 to 18:00 in summer. The Bürgerturm holds the Heroes' Organ. On a summer arrival with time in hand, it is the natural break between the airport and the valley.

After the Eiberg the B 178 runs under the Wilder Kaiser past Söll, Scheffau, Ellmau and Going, the four villages where Der Bergdoktor is filmed every summer. You pass all of them on the way in. If you are a fan, Ellmau is a short stop on the same road rather than a separate trip.

St. Johann skis on the Kitzbüheler Horn: 10 lifts and 40 km of pistes shared with Oberndorf, topping out at 1,604 m. The cable car leaves from Oberndorf, close to the centre, and from the Eichenhof. For 2026/27 it runs daily from 08:30 to 16:00, from 4 December 2026 to 29 March 2027. An adult day pass costs €65.00 in high season.

Munich has two terminals, and your carrier needs your terminal as well as your flight number. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. St. Johann is a market town, not a single resort street: it is the shopping centre of the Kitzbühel district, with the district hospital and a pedestrian zone in the centre. Saturdays in the ski season, 4 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, are the busy days. Three dated periods sit inside that: the Dutch Kerstvakantie, 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027; Hahnenkamm week in Kitzbühel, 18 to 24 January 2027; and the Dutch spring holiday, split between the south, 13 to 21 February, and the north and centre, 20 to 28 February 2027. Nobody publishes a Saturday drive time for this road, so treat any figure you are quoted as a carrier's estimate.
Traffic Patterns
The first delay, when there is one, is lorries. On dates Tyrol announces in advance, it meters lorries over 7.5 t on the southbound A 12 at Kufstein-Nord at up to 250 an hour, and ADAC says the queue often reaches back to the A 8. The announced dates in the ski season are Wednesday 9 December 2026, Thursday 7 January 2027 and then Mondays from 11 January to 15 March. That is before Kufstein Süd, so this route shares it. After the exit, the B 173 over the Eiberg is one of Tyrol's busiest state roads in winter, and the B 178 is the main road between Wörgl and St. Johann.
Road & Border Notes
There is one border, at Kiefersfelden on the motorway. Germany's controls apply on entry into Germany, so they bear mainly on the journey home; ADAC reports them planned to run to 15 March 2027. On the vignette, St. Johann is on the easy side: the fastest route leaves at Kufstein Süd, where the vignette-free section ends, and takes the B 173 and B 178, which are not motorways. Winter tyre law runs from 1 November to 15 April for cars, which need winter tyres in wintry conditions; a coach must have them fitted from 1 November to 15 March whatever the weather.
