St Anton am Arlberg has the best après-ski in the Alps for 2026/27, with Ischgl and Mayrhofen close behind. St Anton appears on ten of the twelve published après rankings we checked, more than any other resort. In France the answer is Val d'Isère or Val Thorens, both built around La Folie Douce. For a festival week, pick Mayrhofen in April for Snowbombing or Saalbach-Hinterglemm in December for Rave on Snow.
This guide ranks fifteen Alpine party resorts, names the bars that are actually open this winter, lists every festival date the organisers have confirmed for 2026/27, and shows what the road from the nearest airport costs. Which Alpine resorts have the best après-ski in 2026/27?
Four Austrian resorts and one French one lead.
The ranking combines how many of twelve published après guides name the resort, its skiresort.com après score, and whether its best-known venues are confirmed open this winter on their own pages. A famous bar that has closed is worth nothing to a group arriving in January.

The top three all sit inside about 100 km of Innsbruck, which is why an Austrian party week costs less on the road than a French one.
Schladming, Flachau, Alpe d'Huez and Avoriaz are covered below. Kitzbühel's party is Hahnenkamm race week in January. Lech, St Anton's neighbour on Ski Arlberg, has the Schneggarei's terrace from 15:00 and no route page yet. The SkiWelt around Söll, which one 2025/26 ranking scores top for après on 32 bars, with a daily DJ at the Hexenalm next to the gondola, is 146 km from Munich, from €185, and Kaprun's Baumbar anchors Zell am See-Kaprun, 85 km from Salzburg. Pas de la Casa in Andorra and Bansko in Bulgaria sit outside the Alps.
Is après-ski better in Austria or France?
Austria, if the party is the point of the trip.
Austrian après happens in huts on the home runs and in village barns from 15:00 or 16:00; the huts stop around 20:00 and the village bars take over, Ischgl's Champagnerhütte until 04:00.
French après is built around one spectacle on the mountain. La Folie Douce in Val d'Isère runs its après from 14:00 to 17:00, so the party ends when the lifts do and the evening moves down to the village. France wins on the size of the ski area and loses on the length of the evening.
A group that wants to ski hard and party for two hours picks France. A group that wants the party to be the trip picks Tyrol.
Is St Anton still the après-ski capital of the Alps?
Yes, on the evidence of the published guides.
St Anton am Arlberg is named by ten of the twelve après rankings in our sample, more than any other resort, and Ski Arlberg itself calls it one of the Alps' après capitals. The reason is geography. The MooserWirt, the Krazy Kanguruh, Taps and the Sennhütte all sit on the run down into the village, so the party happens between the last lift and the hotel rather than in a separate part of town.
The MooserWirt starts its après at 15:30 and the music stops at exactly 20:00, and it reopens for the season on 2 December 2026. The Krazy Kanguruh is the one most guides get half right. Its old building was demolished in 2025 and rebuilt, and it traded again through winter 2025/26 with parties until 20:00. The Heustadl that older lists recommend is now ARL ONE, under that name since winter 2024/25.
The descent needs a plan. Ski Arlberg closes every slope in the resort from 17:00 for grooming and asks guests to plan their return to the valley in good time.
The season opens with the Stanton Ski Open, a free three-stage festival from 4 to 6 December 2026, and the MooserWirt hosts two free Schlagerliebe Live TV recordings on 4 and 5 December. By road it is about 100 km from Innsbruck, from €190, 195 km from Zurich, from €180, or 280 km from Munich, from €295. Our St Anton airport guide compares the three.
What is après-ski like in Ischgl?
Big, late, and unusually well documented.
Ischgl publishes each venue's season dates and opening hours on its official site. The Kuhstall runs from 11:00 to midnight between 25 November 2026 and 1 May 2027. Trofana Alm and Niki's Stadl open at 15:00, the Kitzloch runs its après from 15:00 to 19:00, the Schatzi bar sits at the foot of the Fimbabahn, and the Champagnerhütte in the village keeps going until 04:00. The lifts open on 26 November 2026 and the season runs to 2 May 2027.
The concerts are the other reason to go. The Top of the Mountain opening concert on Saturday 28 November 2026 is Westlife, in the Silvretta car park in the village, doors at 16:30. It is not free, whatever some guides say: entry comes with a multi-day ski pass, or with a day pass that includes the concert at €100 for adults. The Easter, Spring and Closing concerts fall on 28 March, 17 April and 1 May 2027 on the mountain stage, and Ischgl has not yet published the artists or the ticket rules for any of them.
One local rule matters after dark. Ischgl bans ski boots and carried skis, poles and boards in the village centre from 20:00 to 06:00 between 20 November and 5 May, with fines from €25.
Innsbruck is the airport: about 100 km and 1h 30min, from €200. From Munich it is about 200 km, from €235.
Which other Austrian resorts party hardest?
Mayrhofen, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Sölden and Obertauern, in that order.
Mayrhofen
The festival town at the head of the Zillertal.
Mayrhofen is where Snowbombing has run for years, and the 2027 edition is Monday 5 to Saturday 10 April, strictly 18 and over, sold as a full-week wristband with at least five nights' accommodation. Bicep, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada are among the names announced so far. Outside festival week the Ice Bar at the Hotel Strass and the Brück'n Stadl carry the après. The comedy festival some lists still show for spring is taking 2027 off.
Innsbruck Airport is about 75 km away by road, not the 40 to 65 km that some guides quote. The Innsbruck to Mayrhofen run takes about 1h 05min and starts from €125 per vehicle, and a minivan for eight starts from €185, which is about €23 each. From Munich it is 157 km, from €195.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Two villages, one valley, three festivals.
The tourist board lists 23 après venues, including Bauer's Schi-Alm, the Goaßstall in Hinterglemm, the Walleggalm and the Castello club, and the Hinterhag Alm runs its own party from 16:00. Three festivals fall in one winter: BERGFESTival from 3 to 6 December 2026, the 30th Rave on Snow from 10 to 13 December (18 and over), and White Pearl Mountain Days from 19 to 28 March 2027.
Saalbach also has a written noise rule. A municipal ordinance bans outdoor music from 20:00 to 08:00 between 1 December and Easter Sunday, so the terraces fall quiet at eight and the evening moves indoors.
Salzburg is the nearest airport at 90 km and about 1h 30min, which is the tourist board's figure; the 52 km quoted in some guides is not a road distance. Munich to Saalbach-Hinterglemm is 220 km, from €245.
Sölden
The glacier resort that parties from October to April.
Fire & Ice in the village centre opens on 22 October 2026 and runs daily from 14:00 to 02:00, Philipp has a DJ from 15:00, and Giggi Tenne at the base of the Giggijoch lift runs until 22:00. The Katapult club that several guides still send people to is shut, and its operator went bankrupt in August 2026. The Electric Mountain Festival runs from 12 to 17 April 2027, and the season starts early with the Ski World Cup opener on 24 and 25 October.
Sölden is about 83 km from Innsbruck, from €180.
Obertauern, Schladming and Flachau
Three more resorts that skiresort.com rates five out of five for après.
Obertauern is a ski circuit around one village, with the Edelweissalm partying from 15:00. Its ski opening runs from 27 November to 8 December 2026, with Die Fantastischen Vier on 28 November and Anastacia on 4 December, and it is 262 km from Munich, from €310. Schladming's Hohenhaus Tenne sits in the Planai finish stadium with après until 20:00; Helene Fischer plays the ski opening there on 11 and 12 December 2026, and The Nightrace runs a giant slalom on 26 January and a slalom on 27 January 2027. Schladming is about 90 km from Salzburg and has no route page yet. Flachau's Dampfkessel sits next to the Space Jet 1 lift, and Flachau is 185 km from Munich, from €190.
Where is the best après-ski in France?
Val d'Isère and Val Thorens, then Tignes and Méribel.
Val d'Isère and Tignes

La Folie Douce sits at the top of the La Daille gondola, with the cabaret from 12:30 and the après from 14:00 to 17:00. In the village, Cocorico runs its open-air party from 15:00 to 21:00, Le Petit Danois reopens in November with live music from 17:30, and the Doudoune club takes over late. Dick's Tea Bar, still named in several 2025 and 2026 guides, no longer appears in the tourist office's listings and its website has expired; for a late club the office now lists IMA, open to 04:00.
Tignes shares the ski area and has its own scene: the Loop Bar at the bottom of the Trolles slope, and a second Cocorico at the foot of the Grande Motte funicular from 29 November 2026. European Snow Pride fills Tignes from 20 to 27 March 2027.
Geneva to Val d'Isère is about 225 km and 3h to 3h 30min, from €260, and Geneva to Tignes is from €250. On a changeover Saturday, add time; our French Alps transfer guide explains why.
Val Thorens and Méribel
Les 3 Vallées' two party villages, on opposite sides of the same ski area.
Val Thorens has La Folie Douce between the Pionniers and Plein Sud chairlifts, the 360 bar at 2,368 m partying from 14:00 to 18:00 all season, and the Malaysia club beneath the main square until 04:00. European Gay Ski Week comes to Val Thorens from 13 to 20 March 2027. The resort opens on 21 November 2026. No Val Thorens route page exists yet, so the request goes in against the Geneva hub.
Méribel's answer is Le Rond Point, on the mountain above the village, with live music from 16:30 to 19:00. The shared La Folie Douce Méribel-Courchevel sits at the Saulire Express mid-station, on the Méribel side, from 12 December 2026 to 3 April 2027; Courchevel has no Folie Douce of its own, so this is its nearest. Geneva to Méribel is about 180 km, from €225.
Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez and Avoriaz
The younger, cheaper and festival-led end of France.
Les Deux Alpes has Smithy's Tavern, the PanoBar at 2,600 m and the RISE festival in December. Alpe d'Huez hosts Tomorrowland Winter from 20 to 27 March 2027, with about 22,000 people on seven stages, and skiresort.com's verdict on the rest of its winter is candid: lively nightlife, but no classic après atmosphere on the hill. Avoriaz has Snowboxx from 13 to 20 March 2027 and a Folie Douce that runs its terrace après from 15:00. None of the three has a TransferBnB route page yet; the Geneva hub quotes all of them.
Where is La Folie Douce?
In seven French ski areas, plus a hotel in Chamonix.
La Folie Douce lists eight locations for this winter:
- Val d'Isère: top of the La Daille gondola.
- Val Thorens: between the Pionniers and Plein Sud chairlifts.
- Méribel-Courchevel: Saulire Express mid-station, on the Méribel side.
- Alpe d'Huez: at the Marmottes chairlift, reopening for 2026/27.
- Saint-Gervais Megève: top of the Mont-Joux chairlift, skiers only.
- Avoriaz: opening in December 2026, après on the terrace from 15:00.
- Les Arcs: Arc 1800, reached from Geneva.
- Chamonix: a hotel in town, open all year, not a venue on the mountain.
That last line is the one the lists get wrong: there is no mountain Folie Douce in Chamonix, nor in Courchevel, Tignes, Les Menuires or Les Deux Alpes. Chamonix's après is a town scene around Chambre Neuf and the MBC brewery, 88 km from Geneva, from €150.
What about Switzerland and Italy?
Verbier and Zermatt in Switzerland; Madonna di Campiglio and Livigno in Italy.
Verbier
Switzerland's party resort, with a festival before the season starts.
The Pub Mont Fort opens every day from 15:00 to 02:00, and Le Farinet on the Place Centrale runs live bands through après. The Polaris electronic festival plays on the mountain above Verbier over two weekends, 20 to 21 and 27 to 28 November 2026, with the gondola included in the ticket. Geneva to Verbier is 160 to 171 km, from €210. Verbier sits in the canton of Valais, which since January 2026 bans sparklers and other pyrotechnics in every establishment open to the public.
Zermatt
Après under the Matterhorn, with a train for the last kilometres.
Hennu Stall sits on the lower run from Furi into the village, and Cervo runs its two terraces from 15:00 to 18:00 from 27 November 2026. Zermatt Unplugged brings live music from 6 to 10 April 2027. Every road transfer ends at Täsch, where a shuttle train covers the last stretch in 12 minutes: Geneva to Täsch is about 220 km, from €385.
Madonna di Campiglio and Livigno
Two very different Italian scenes.
Madonna di Campiglio is the only Italian resort with a five-star après score on skiresort.com, and the party is at Chalet Spinale at the top of the Spinale gondola, six minutes from the centre, with DJs in the afternoon. Livigno's tourist office calls Stalet, by the Carosello 3000 gondola, the largest après venue in the resort, with après until 20:00; the lifts open on 28 November 2026.
Neither resort has a TransferBnB route page. Verona is 176 km from Campiglio, and Zurich 234 km from Livigno.

Snowboxx, Rock the Pistes, Tomorrowland Winter and two LGBTQ+ ski weeks all fall between 13 and 27 March, so late March fills first. Early December is the Austrian festival fortnight.
Three changes to old calendars matter. Caprices has moved from Crans-Montana to Gstaad, running on two weekends, 12 to 14 and 19 to 21 March 2027. Snowpenair at Grindelwald ended with its 25th edition in 2024. And Mountain Beats in the Silvretta Montafon adds a January date, 15 and 16 January 2027, on the mountain at over 2,100 m.
What time does après-ski start, and what are the local rules?
Between 14:00 and 16:00, depending on the country.
French mountain venues start first and finish with the lifts, from 14:00 to 17:00 or 18:00. Austrian huts start at 15:00 or 16:00 and stop around 20:00, and the village bars carry on.
The rules are local, and they vary by village:
- Ischgl: no ski boots or carried ski gear in the centre from 20:00 to 06:00, 20 November to 5 May.
- Saalbach-Hinterglemm: no outdoor music from 20:00 to 08:00, 1 December to Easter Sunday.
- Ski Arlberg: every slope closes from 17:00 for grooming.
- Sölden: an alcohol-free zone on the main street ran through winter 2025/26; its renewal has not been announced.
- Italy: skiing while drunk carries a fine of €250 to €1,000, and third-party liability insurance is compulsory on the pistes.

Innsbruck puts four of the top seven resorts inside 1h 30min, and the Geneva corridors to the French party villages run two and a half to three and a half hours before anyone reaches a bar.

The opening concert is on Saturday 28 November 2026 with Westlife, in the Silvretta car park in the village, doors at 16:30. It is not free: entry comes with a multi-day ski pass or a day pass including the concert at €100 for adults. The Easter, Spring and Closing concerts are on 28 March, 17 April and 1 May 2027, and Ischgl has not yet published their artists or ticket rules.
