Saturday is changeover day in the Alps: most chalet and apartment weeks run Saturday to Saturday, so the guests leaving and the guests arriving share one valley road. On the last Saturday of February 2026 the authorities in Savoie forecast disruption toward the resorts from 08:00 to 19:00. Travel on a Sunday or midweek if you can. If you cannot, land before about 10:00 or after about 17:30.
This guide covers which Saturdays matter in winter 2026/27, the hours the French traffic forecasts told drivers to avoid last February, what that means for a flight into Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble or Chambéry, when to leave the resort for a flight home, and how Austria compares. It is one chapter of our complete guide to ski transfers in Europe.

What is Saturday changeover day in the Alps?
It is the day the mountains swap guests.
Most chalets, apartments and package weeks in the French Alps run Saturday to Saturday. The people checking out in the morning and the people checking in that afternoon use the same road in opposite directions, and so does every coach, delivery van and transfer vehicle serving both.
The road is why it matters more in France than anywhere else. The Tarentaise valley holds Val d'Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Méribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens, and the prefecture of Savoie describes the N90 as the only route to its resorts. The road authority counts about 25,000 vehicles a day on the N90 between Albertville and Moûtiers on average, and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays.
Nearly three times the traffic, on the same road.
Val d'Isère's tourist office puts winter weekend traffic toward the resorts 40% above its 1992 level, the year Albertville hosted the Olympics and the valley road was last widened.

Which Saturdays are the busiest in winter 2026/27?
The ones where a school holiday starts or ends.
Every winter Saturday is a changeover day, but the queues belong to the holiday weeks. France staggers its winter school holidays over three zones, which makes five holiday Saturdays in a row, and the English half term and the Dutch spring break land on the middle two.
| Saturday | Who is on the road | National forecast, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes |
|---|---|---|
| 19 December 2026 | Christmas holidays begin in France and the Netherlands | Green. The Friday before is orange toward the resorts |
| 26 December 2026 | Christmas week leaves, New Year week arrives | Orange in both directions |
| 2 January 2027 | New Year week goes home; French schools resume on 4 January | Red in both directions |
| 6 February 2027 | The Paris zone begins its holiday | Not yet published |
| 13 February 2027 | The Lyon and Grenoble zone begins, with English half term and the southern Netherlands | Not yet published |
| 20 February 2027 | The third French zone begins and the Paris zone goes home; half term ends; the rest of the Netherlands begins | Not yet published |
| 27 February 2027 | The Lyon and Grenoble zone goes home | Not yet published |
| 6 March 2027 | The last French zone goes home | Not yet published |

Read the right-hand column first. Bison Futé, the French national traffic forecast, has published only as far as 7 January 2027, and in that stretch one Saturday is red: 2 January. The forecast for 19 December flags the Friday and leaves the Saturday green.
February is where the weight is. In February 2026 the four holiday Saturdays were rated orange, red, red and red toward the resorts in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and the third was the weekend when every French zone was moving at once. The 2027 equivalent is 20 February.
English half term has no national date, so check your own council. Bristol, for example, breaks from 13 to 21 February 2027.
How much longer does a transfer take on a changeover Saturday?
Nobody official will give you a number.
No road authority in the Alps publishes a Saturday delay in minutes. The figures that circulate widely, anything from 30 minutes to four hours, are estimates for different roads on different days, and most guides quote them without saying whose they are. What is published is the volume and the hours.
The volume first. For the last weekend of February 2026 the prefecture expected nearly 209,000 vehicles on Savoie's roads. A year earlier, for the first weekend of the 2025 winter holidays, it forecast 32,000 vehicles climbing toward the Tarentaise resorts on the Saturday and 22,000 on the Friday, and that Saturday morning about 60 km of queues were counted in Isère and Savoie, most of them on the A43 between Lyon and Chambéry.
The nearest thing to a delay figure is the timetable of the companies who drive the road every week, and our route pages print two of them. From Geneva Airport to Courchevel they publish 2h15 to 2h30 midweek and 3h15 to 3h45 on a peak changeover Saturday. From Geneva Airport to Verbier it is 1h45 to 2h10 on an ordinary day and 2h45 to 3h10 on a peak Saturday.
About an hour more on both, from the people with the most reason to get it right.
Which hours are worst on a changeover Saturday?
Mid-morning to late afternoon going up. Dawn to lunchtime coming down.
France publishes this road by road, a few days before each weekend. The table below is last February: the four holiday Saturdays, with the national forecast's own advice on which stretch to avoid and when.
| Saturday, 2026 | Rating toward the resorts | Avoid, toward the resorts | Avoid, toward the airports |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 February | Orange | A43 Lyon to Chambéry 08:00 to 18:00; A40 toward Chamonix 11:00 to 15:00 | A43 09:00 to 16:00; A40 11:00 to 13:00 |
| 14 February | Red | A43 Lyon to Chambéry 09:00 to 14:00; A40 toward Chamonix 11:00 to 14:00; A48 into Grenoble 10:00 to 17:00 | A43 11:00 to 14:00; A40 09:00 to 15:00 |
| 21 February | Red | A43 Lyon to Chambéry 08:00 to 14:00; A40 toward Chamonix 11:00 to 16:00 | A43 10:00 to 17:00; A40 10:00 to 14:00 |
| 28 February | Red | A43 Lyon to Chambéry 09:00 to 18:00; A40 toward Chamonix 10:00 to 16:00; N90 Albertville to Bourg-Saint-Maurice 14:00 to 16:00 | A43 11:00 to 14:00; A40 10:00 to 12:00 |
Source: Bison Futé detailed forecasts for the four weekends, published January and February 2026. Ratings are for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Read across the rows and the pattern holds on all four. The A43 from Lyon fills from 08:00 or 09:00 and stays full until 14:00 at best and 18:00 at worst. The A40, the motorway from Geneva toward Chamonix, starts later, at 10:00 or 11:00, and clears between 14:00 and 16:00. Traffic toward the airports builds from 09:00 to 11:00 and is over by mid-afternoon.
The valley itself is covered by the prefecture of Savoie, which publishes a bulletin every Friday in winter. For Saturday 28 February 2026 it forecast disruption for arrivals from 08:00 to 19:00 and for departures from the resorts from 06:00 to 13:00. For the Sunday it expected nothing on the way up and three slow hours, 10:00 to 13:00, on the way down.
Friday is not a free pass either. On Friday 13 February 2026 drivers were told to avoid the A43 out of Lyon from 15:00 to 20:00, and the prefect of Savoie has said that Friday now takes 30% of arrivals.
What time should your flight land on a Saturday?
Early or late, and the middle of the day is the trap.
Most guides say to land before 11:00 or after 18:00. For the Tarentaise that morning cut-off is too generous, because it measures the airport and not the valley. Albertville, where the N90 begins, is about an hour and a half from Geneva Airport, and the clock does not start until your bags are in the car.
Land at Geneva at 08:00, allow 45 minutes to reach the car, and you pass Albertville at about 10:15: inside the day's slow window, but hours ahead of its worst.
Land at 12:30 and you reach Albertville at about 14:45, which on the last Saturday of February 2026 was the middle of the two hours drivers were told to stay off that road.
The evening works on the same sum. Land at 17:30 and you pass Albertville at about 19:45, after the prefecture's window had closed. So for Courchevel, Méribel, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère from Geneva Airport, the rule is before about 10:00 or after about 17:30.
The other gateways each move the sum:
- Geneva Airport to Chamonix - the A40 window opened at 10:00 or 11:00 last February and the drive to Chamonix is about 1h 15min, so a landing by 09:00 or after about 15:30 keeps you clear of it.
- Lyon Airport - Lyon sits at the start of the A43, whose window opened at 08:00 or 09:00 on all four Saturdays. No morning flight beats that. Land from about 17:30 for Val Thorens, or fly on the Sunday.
- Grenoble Airport - the winter flights are nearly all on Saturdays, which is the subject of our guide to flying to Grenoble for skiing. On 14 February 2026 the A48 into the city was the stretch to avoid from 10:00 to 17:00, which matters for the drive to Alpe d'Huez.
- Chambéry Airport - the nearest runway to the valley, and a Saturday airport by design: its terminal hours follow the Saturday flight schedule. It skips the Lyon motorway and joins the N90 with everybody else.
If the airport is still open to choice, see our comparison of Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry for the French Alps. At Geneva, part of the 45 minutes is fixed: the airport does not allow pick-ups in its Kiss and Fly area, so your driver parks and meets you inside Arrivals.

What time should you leave the resort for a Saturday flight home?
Before dawn or after lunch.
The usual rule, leave six to seven hours before the flight, treats the whole day as equally slow. It is not. On 28 February 2026 the prefecture's window for leaving the resorts ran from 06:00 to 13:00, and on all four February Saturdays the motorways toward Geneva and Lyon were flagged from 09:00, 10:00 or 11:00.
Leave Val d'Isère at 05:30, with about three hours to Geneva on a clear road, and you are at the terminal around 08:30 for a flight from 10:30. Leave at 13:00 and you are there around 16:00, for a flight from 18:00.
The flight to avoid is the one at 14:00. It puts you on the valley road between 08:00 and 09:00, with every other guest whose chalet wanted the keys back that morning.
If check-out forces a morning departure, give the carrier your flight time when you book and let them set the pickup. A time from someone who drives that road every Saturday is worth more than a rule of thumb.
Is Sunday to Sunday worth it?
Yes, wherever the accommodation allows it.
Val d'Isère's own tourist office says so on its road conditions page: "To avoid heavy holiday traffic on Saturdays, consider arriving at or departing from Val d'Isère on a different day. For example, you could book your stay from Sunday to Sunday." The forecasts agree. All four February 2026 Sundays were green in both directions, and the Savoie bulletin for Sunday 1 March expected no difficulty at all toward the resorts.
The catch is supply. Many chalet weeks are sold Saturday to Saturday and nothing else, and several shared coaches run at weekends only, as our piece on shared shuttle prices by resort shows route by route. Some winter airports barely fly on any other day. A Friday arrival is the second-best answer, not a clean one, because the Friday evening is forecast as well.
A private transfer is the one part of the trip that does not care which day you pick. It is booked to your flight, on a Sunday, a Tuesday or a Friday night, and it goes to the door.
Is Saturday as bad in Austria?
Saturday is the busiest travel day there too.
Austria's national broadcaster said it plainly before the February 2026 holidays, and the national motoring club called the weekend a holidaymakers' shift change in the ski areas. Its list of pinch points named the Fernpass, the Zillertal and the Ötztal, the roads around Kitzbühel and the A12 at the Kufstein border in Tyrol, and the Arlberg road in Vorarlberg. Those are the roads a transfer takes from Innsbruck Airport to St Anton and Ischgl, and from Munich Airport to Mayrhofen.
Tyrol's response is to close the side roads. In winter 2025/26 the province banned through traffic on selected lower roads in four districts on weekends and public holidays, 07:00 to 19:00, from 20 December to 6 April, and it turned back about 250,000 vehicles the winter before. Traffic with a destination in the valley is exempt, which covers a transfer to a booked address. The dates for 2026/27 had not been published when we checked on 9 October 2026.
The difference is the forecast. Neither source gives hours to avoid, so the French pattern, early or late, is the best guide available. Innsbruck's short drives help: about 1h 20min to St Anton and 1h 30min to Ischgl, as our Innsbruck Airport guide sets out.
Can a transfer driver avoid the Saturday traffic?
No, and it is better to know that before you book.
A private vehicle sits in the same queue as the coach beside it. On the Tarentaise there is no way around: the prefecture closes several N90 exits from 04:30 on Saturday until Sunday morning, tells drivers to ignore the sat-nav and stay on the main road, and runs a traffic light before Moûtiers that lets through only as many vehicles as the valley can absorb. Live conditions and closures are on savoie-route.fr.
What a private transfer changes is everything either side of the queue. It leaves when you land, not when the last passenger on a shared vehicle clears baggage reclaim, which our guide to airport shuttles and private transfers puts in hours. It goes to your door, not to a coach stop. And the pickup time is set by someone who drove the same road the Saturday before.
Book a transfer around the changeover
TransferBnB is a marketplace: you post the trip, verified local carriers who drive that road send offers, and you choose one. On a changeover Saturday, put the flight number and landing time in the request, so the offers you get are priced and timed for the day you are actually travelling.
Start from the route page for your resort: Geneva Airport to Courchevel, from €225, Geneva Airport to Val d'Isère, Lyon Airport to Courchevel or Innsbruck Airport to St Anton. For any other resort, our ski resort transfers page takes the request, and the French Alps transfer guide has prices by corridor. Whether you land at 08:00 or at 18:00, book earlier than you would for an ordinary week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is changeover day in a ski resort?
Changeover day is the day weekly ski stays end and begin, and in the French Alps it is Saturday. Guests leaving in the morning and guests arriving in the afternoon share the same valley road. The N90 into the Tarentaise carries about 25,000 vehicles a day on average and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays.
Which Saturdays are the busiest in the French Alps in 2026/27?
The holiday Saturdays: 26 December 2026, 2 January 2027, and 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March 2027, when the French school zones start and finish their holidays. The national forecast so far rates 2 January red in both directions and 26 December orange. February forecasts appear a few days before each weekend.
What time should I land at Geneva on a Saturday for a ski transfer?
Before about 10:00 or after about 17:30 for the Tarentaise resorts. Albertville, where the valley road starts, is about an hour and a half from Geneva Airport, and on 28 February 2026 arrivals were forecast disrupted from 08:00 to 19:00, with the valley road worst from 14:00 to 16:00. For Chamonix, land by 09:00 or after about 15:30. A private transfer leaves as soon as you are through Arrivals.
How much longer does a ski transfer take on a Saturday?
No road authority publishes a delay in minutes. Companies that drive from Geneva Airport to Courchevel publish 2h15 to 2h30 midweek and 3h15 to 3h45 on a peak changeover Saturday, and to Verbier 1h45 to 2h10 against 2h45 to 3h10. That is about an hour more.
What time should I leave Val d'Isère or Courchevel for a Saturday flight from Geneva?
Before 06:00 or after 13:00. On 28 February 2026 the Savoie prefecture forecast disruption for traffic leaving the resorts from 06:00 to 13:00. Leaving Val d'Isère at 05:30 suits a flight from about 10:30, and leaving at 13:00 suits a flight from about 18:00. A flight around 14:00 puts you on the valley road at its busiest.
Is it better to travel Sunday to Sunday?
Yes, where the accommodation allows it. Val d'Isère's tourist office recommends it, all four February 2026 Sundays were forecast green in both directions, and the Savoie bulletin for Sunday 1 March 2026 expected no difficulty toward the resorts. Shared coaches often run at weekends only, but a private transfer is booked to your flight on any day.
Is Saturday traffic as bad in Austria as in France?
Saturday is the busiest travel day in Austria too. The national motoring club's February 2026 list of pinch points named the Fernpass, the Zillertal, the Ötztal and the Kufstein border in Tyrol, and the Arlberg road in Vorarlberg. Tyrol closes selected side roads to through traffic on winter weekends from 07:00 to 19:00. A transfer to a booked address counts as destination traffic and is exempt.
Can a transfer driver avoid the Saturday traffic?
No. On the Tarentaise the prefecture closes several N90 exits from 04:30 on Saturday and tells drivers to stay on the main road, so every vehicle shares one queue. A private transfer saves the time around it: it leaves when you land, sets the pickup with the day's traffic in mind, and goes to your door.
